The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) was asked to come up with a standard on wildland firefighting clothing and protective equipment worn during wildland firefighting and wildland firefighting operations. The goal of the NFPA 1977 standard was to provide thermal protection for the wildland firefighter against external heat sources with flame-resistant clothing and equipment, while not inducing an extraordinary internal heat stress load. Research by the NFPA showed that the majority of injuries to wildland firefighters were due to heat stress caused when fighting brush fires and forest fires. This NFPA 1977 standard encompasses the clothing and protective apparel worn during normal exposure limits.

The NFPA 1977 standard states the minimum requirements for protective clothing, footwear, helmets, gloves, protective face/neck shroud, cold weather outerwear, chainsaw protectors, load carrying equipment and goggles that are designed to protect wildland fire fighters during a wildland firefighting operation. The NFPA 1977 - 2005 edition also includes the optional high visibility standards for hi-vis wildland firefighting (WFF) clothing.
